HB 236 Safe Staffing 

First, thank you to everyone who came to the legislature for our days of action to get Safe Staffing legislation passed. Legislators were impressed and moved by the testimony that our members gave on why safe staffing is important to patients and to the healthcare workers who care for them.

HB 236 passed out of Health and Human Services and House Judiciary committees. We were short 5 votes in the House of Representatives to be able to send HB 236 to Senate committees and the entire Senate for consideration.

What’s next?

We have meetings scheduled in Santa Fe and Albuquerque scheduled to debrief the session and to plan our next steps. We plan on introducing Safe Staffing legislation again in January and there’s lots we need to do to prepare.

Contract Negotiations

The UNMH Union negotiating team meets every Tuesday at 9:00 am with the University of New Mexico management team. This year we are negotiating a full contract that includes wages and other contract language.

The Union negotiating team at Christus are busy preparing for upcoming negotiations for the RN and Tech chapter contracts.

University of New Mexico Hospital Listening Sessions

“Each listening session will allow residents to voice their needs, concerns, or feedback about health care in Bernalillo County and how UNM Hospital can improve the services it provides.  The listening sessions will also give UNM Hospital’s leaders and the Board of County Commissioners important feedback before Bernalillo County voters are asked to extend the mill levy on their property taxes when they go to the ballot box in November 2024 “. (Bernalillo County website) County Commissioners and UNMH representatives will be present at all the listening sessions.

We encourage everyone to attend and give your suggestions on how UNMH can improve health care at the Hospital.

The sessions are as follows:

Call for Delegates!

The New Mexico State Federation of Labor Convention will take place June 17, 2023 in Albuquerque. District 1199NM is allocated 8 delegates. If you are interested in attending the Convention, please send your name to the Union office at district1199@district1199nm.org no later than April 10, 2023. If we receive more than 8 members who are interested in attending, we will hold an election to determine who will represent District 1199NM at the Convention.
